SocialTech: Open Source Social Software
Given the proliferation of social networking software, this is a useful listing of open source software that you may or may not have already heard of. I am quite surprised that of all the s/w listed, I am only somewhat familiar with but three of them.
Once again I am running across Elgg, which I have yet to really explore and keep meaning to do so. Under the Open Source Virtual Worlds category, I have heard of
- Croquet http://www.opencroquet.org/, but not used it or really investigated it.
- I am a bit more familiar with the NMC Open Virtual Worlds Project http://www.nmc.org/news/nmc/nmc-launche, but can’t really lay claim to being all that knowlegable about it. I’m surprised that I know so little of what is mentioned here, as I thought I was better informed. How did this happen? (This is not really a serious question)

Finding an Instructional Strategy
Posted by Elaine under Uncategorized | Tags: instructional design, instructional strategies, pbl, problem-based learning |Leave a Comment
I love serendipitous events. To wit: I went the the gym yesterday to work out on the stairclimber, and took some work-related reading material with me. In the first of two journals, I found what might be an instructional strategy that I can use with a new client.
The client trains professional to do functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) as well as ergonomic evaluations, and they want to put online their two-day workshops. This first workshop centers around helping the participants to think critically about how to write up the report that must accompany the evaluations, and there is no standard to use as a reference. It is all ab out interpreting the data, which is a very subjective exercise and changes with every evaluation given and report written.
But I found a strategy that is specifically designed to address ill-formed, problem-solving scenarios , and is one that centers on a case-based approach using some simple multi-media. I’ll write more about this as I get further into the project, but I am excited to have found what might be a very working model for me.

Wired Campus: Students Show How to Cheat via YouTube – Chronicle.com
I know that students cheat, people lie, and do all other sorts of behavior that have a less than positive influence on the world. Which is not to say that I am on the road to sainthood. (I am clear this is one aspiration I do not have).
But I am still discouraged to read of creativity being put to use in this manner.
